Dr. Fontes is a surgeon/scientist/entrepreneur with 10 years of experience in commercial biotech after a successful 20-year career in academic medicine. He has contributed to 6 patents and started 4 companies while contributing to more than $30M in fundraising. Dr. Fontes trained in transplant immunology, cell transplantation and multi-organ transplantation before becoming Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Liver Transplant Program, Starzl Transplantation Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for almost a decade. He was a Deputy Director at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine for years before joining West Virginia University, Department of Surgery as the Director of Surgical Innovation & Research.
